Bastoni had talks with Spurs and Conte in summer

Alessandro Bastoni had talks with Spurs in the summer for a move to the North London club. However, the Italian defender wanted to stay at Inter and rejected their proposal. Tottenham Hotspur were keen to get the signature of Bastoni, as Conte liked him. However, Bastoni is happy at Inter and does not want to leave anytime soon. He has a contract with Inter till 2024 and is looking to improve at his favorite club.

Antonio Conte knows the qualities of Bastoni hence, he wanted a reunion at Spurs with his former defender. Both Conte and Spurs’ sporting director, Fabio Paratici have many contacts in Italy. They decided to have talks with Bastoni to lure him to the North London club. Spurs play with a similar three at the back system. So, Bastoni would have been a perfect fit at the left side of the back three. Also, he is already familiar with Conte’s system, so he would have settled quickly.

The Italian defender discussed the style of play of both managers. He said under Conte, the team knew exactly what they had to do. There were pre-defined tactics and there was a specific role for every player in Conte’s system. Meanwhile, Inzaghi has different ideas as he gave freedom to players. They were no longer under the rigid system and had to make decisions on the pitch on their own. Bastoni is thankful to Inzaghi, as his offensive instincts to move forward developed under him.

The Nerazzurri defender is also sad by missing out on the World Cup qualification. He wanted to represent his country on the big stage for the first time. He agrees that it is a huge blow for Italian football, as they have missed out twice consecutively.
