Inter beat Cagliari 1-0 to move 11 points clear of Milan

Inter Milan continued their march to the first Serie A title in more than a decade as they beat Cagliari 1-0. They restore their 11 point lead over AC Milan. Third-place Juventus hosts Genoa later. Victory would still leave the nine-time defending champion 12 points behind Inter. While Cagliari remain five points from safety.

Inter were confident for this match as they came from a 2-1 victory over Sassuolo. But, the relegation-threatened Cagliari were proving to be a tough nut to crack at the San Siro. Their goalkeeper Vicario, made several fine saves to keep the hosts at bay. The Sardinian side were without their first-choice keeper Alessio Cragno after he contracted the coronavirus on Italy duty. So Vicario made his Serie A debut.

With such a healthy lead at the top of the Serie A table and playing the third match this week, Conte decided to give rest to a couple of players. Sanchez and Darmian came in for Lautaro and Hakimi. But, Inter’s cohesion did not suffer early on as they created plenty of chances. They had the best chances but Vicario managed to keep the score goalless while at the other end Samir Handanovic was barely tested. Eriksen forced the best save from Vicario in the first half. He made a fine one-handed stop to claw out the powerful strike from the Dane.

Stefan de Vrij headed a corner off the bar in the 69th minute. As the match went on, Inter started to look nervous. So, Conte brought Martinez and Hakimi on. The latter combined really well with Lukaku to cross the ball for Darmian to fire it home and celebrated with the whole squad. Inter’s 12th successive home league win leaves them needing 14 points from their last eight matches to assure the Scudetto.
