Romelu Lukaku and Lautaro Martinez made the difference as Inter beat Sassuolo 2-1 at the San Siro. Lukaku scored a brilliant header to break the deadlock in the 10th minute. Also, he provided the assist for Lautaro’s goal in the 67th minute. Conte’s side are now 11 points clear of the second-place AC Milan with their 10th successive victory.
It was Lukaku’s 21st league goal of the season. But he remains four behind Ronaldo in the scoring charts. The Juve forward also netted in his side’s 2-1 win over Napoli in another rearranged match. Juventus moved into third. The nine-time defending champion is 12 points behind Inter. The match between Inter and Sassuolo was meant to be played just before the international break. But it was postponed due to a coronavirus outbreak in the Nerazzurri camp.
Sassuolo played well but still Inter beat Sassuolo 2-1
Ashley Young sent in a right-footed cross from the left and his former Man United team-mate Lukaku guided the ball into the far corner with a header from 10 yards. Sassuolo were without a number of players through coronavirus concerns. But they would have been level if not for a fine Milan Skriniar block to thwart Jeremie Boga in the box. The lively Boga tested Samir on the other side of the half-time interval. The visitors, who held Roma in their last match, started to pose more of a threat. But Martinez gave Inter further breathing space by burying a low shot past Consigli once picked out by Lukaku on the counter. Sassuolo felt de Vrij pulled back on the shirt of skipper Raspadori in the build-up but VAR did not feel the need to intervene.
However, Inter’s win was not without a scare as Traore curled a fine finish away from Handanovic following a Hakimi error. But there was no late equalizer at San Siro.
