Inter eye Chris Smalling on a free transfer

Inter Milan eye Chris Smalling from AS Roma, as he is going to be out of contract by the end of June 2023. The Nerazzurri are looking for a replacement for a defender as De Vrij might leave Inter, and Acerbi could move back to Lazio. So bringing Smalling as a free agent will be ideal for Inter, as they have financial issues. Also, Juventus are looking at Smalling’s contract situation as well, so Inter will have to make their move faster.

The Nerazzurri has been struggling in defense this season and will have to upgrade in the summer. Smalling has enough Serie A experience, and he is comfortable with the back-three system. Also, he is among the best defenders in the league in terms of blocks. His experience will help Inter when they lose Acerbi or De Vrij. Smalling operates in the middle of the back three for Roma, so he can settle easily settle at Inter. But he will have to adjust to the higher defensive line of Inter, as Roma play with a much deeper line.

The Bianconeri are also monitoring Smalling’s contract situation. They are looking for an experienced defender, after the departure of Chiellini. Bremer has been good, but Juve are now playing with the back three systems. Smalling on a free transfer will improve their defense. With De Ligt, and Bremer already in the squad, Smalling can form a formidable back three.

Jose Mourinho likes Smalling from his time at Manchester United. The Portuguese manager would not like to lose Smalling, and Roma will begin contract extension talks soon. They have already sent a proposal that has reduced wages on his current deal to €3.5 million per season. The Giallorossi will have to improve their offer, or else Smalling could join either Inter or Juventus.
