Inter lose to Villarreal in their last pre-season game. The Nerazzurri suffered a heavy 4-2 defeat and will have to rectify their mistakes soon as the season starts next week. Unai Emery’s Villarreal exposed Inter’s weakness to counter-attacks as most of the three goals came in that manner. Inzaghi had to start Asllani as Brozovic had a minor calf injury, and the young midfielder made a couple of mistakes. Inter will take some positives as Lukaku looked good and managed to score a goal.

Inter had a good first 15 minutes as they were keeping the ball and creating chances. Dumfries played a wonderful cross-over to the left-flank in the 12th minute. Gosens managed to get in position, but he could not keep his volley on target. Villarreal managed to turn the tide with a brilliant goal from Pedraza. The Spanish full-back placed a perfect volley to the corner and gave Villarreal the lead.

Inter were quick to equalize as they committed some bodies forward. Gosens delivered a pinpoint cross to the Belgian in the box. Lukaku managed to jump over Pau Torres to take Inter to level terms. Villarreal managed to restore their lead after Bastoni gave away the ball. Coquelin found the net following a cut-back.

Villarreal started the second half strongly and were targeting the space left behind Dumfries and Gosens. They got their third goal as Dumfries was caught up-field in transition, and Jackson found Pedraza wide. The Spanish full-back went past Skriniar and scored through the legs of Handanovic to complete his brace.

Inzaghi made substitutions, but Inter failed to create chances and were getting weak in transition. Villarreal had another chance as Foyth went past a couple of players and played the ball to Pino, who found Baena. But Handanovic managed to save the header on the line. Inter managed to reduce the deficit as Dimarco played a perfect ball in the box, and D’Ambrosio made a late run to score the header.

Villarreal however, restored their two-goal cushion as Asllani could not intercept the ball to Parejo. Inter were caught in transition again, and Jackson managed to finish his chance for the second time following Handanovic’s save. Inter will have to take a hard look at themselves as many teams will try to exploit them in transition this season.
