Inter vs Monchengladbach post match review

Inter vs Monchengladbach on matchday one of the UEFA Champions League turned out to be as exciting as disappointing for the Nerazzurri. Lukaku’s 90th-minute equalizer saved Inter from giving away three points at home. While the scoreline says otherwise, Inter dominated the game for the most part. In the first half, Inter successfully blocked Gladbach from making quick buildups and counters. Also, Inter dominated possession and built on attacks by coming close to scoring more often than not.

While Sanchez clearly struggled due to a possible niggle, Christian Eriksen finally showed up with his skills. The Danish midfielder made impressive forward runs which oozed of confidence. The Nerazzurri will regret that they didn’t capitalize on their dominance in the first half to score a goal. Gladbach were seemingly nervous in the first few minutes of the half and made bad passes.

Lautaro came on from Sanchez in the second half and made a quick impact while also coming close to scoring later in the match. Lukaku put one into the net in the 49th minute. At this moment, Inter had absolute control of the game. Moreover, the Nerazzurri came into the second half to press Gladbach high up the pitch and regain possession. As the German side did the same, Inter played long balls to Lukaku which didn’t really please the Belgian striker.

Inter vs Monchengladbach

Inter vs Monchengladbach, defensive errors cost the match

Both the goals Inter conceded were results of defensive errors. Firstly, Vidal put in a tackle that he should’ve avoided inside the box which eventually led to a penalty. After scoring the penalty Gladbach were on Inter’s back for a good 10 minutes. While the Nerazzurri somehow got out of a high press imposed by Gladbach, the German side scored another through a counter. Surprisingly enough, there was absolutely no one to defend a winger making a run with Vidal being the last defender. While Hofmann was possibly offside before scoring the goal, the Referee ruled out the possibility as there was no clear angle. Inter were unlucky to concede both these goals as Gladbach did little to deserve a draw.

While the Inter vs Monchengladbach match is a disappointment for Inter fans, there are positives too. Inter looked like a very settled side on the field this time. Yes, there were glaring mistakes in the defence but overall Inter were just unlucky to not get the three points. Inter surely missed the services of Achraf Hakimi and Milan Skriniar in defence as both are COVID positive. With Real Madrid’s loss to Shaktar, the group is turning out to be a mess. And Inter must put some wins on the board and avoid losses to qualify. Looks like Antonio Conte can finally shrug off his Champions League woes.
