San Siro project delayed due to Nerazzurri’s ownership

San Siro project delayed due to the questionable future of Inter’s ownership. The current owners Suning were trying to fix a deal with The Evergrande Group, China’s second-largest property developer. However, they have called off the deal with them. Inter are struggling with finances since the last season. However, not just the Nerazzurri but various other clubs are under financial constraint at the moment. These are the after-effects of the Coronavirus pandemic.

The San Siro was built on the idea of the AC Milan owner, Piero Pirelli. He was a huge fan of English football. Thus, he wanted to build an English style stadium dedicated only to football. It took a record time of 13 months to build. The construction started in August 1925 and ended in September 1926. Furthermore, the stadium had a capacity of 35,000 back then and was still used for racetracks. San Siro hosted the 1934 World Cup semi-finals against Italy and Austria where Italy won by 1-0. Soon after, the City of Milan bought the stadium, and the expansion project started in 1935.

Both Inter Milan and AC Milan were extremely successful at the San Siro between the 60s and 80s. Nonetheless, Inter are looking forward to winning the Scudetto this season. The Nerazzurri might be struggling financially but Conte has found balance with his squad at the moment. In fact, the good news has come at the perfect time for the Nerazzurri boss.

The Italian giants have been in search of new owners since they’ve failed to pay the wages of their players on time. Both the Italian clubs made a joint request for the construction of new ground in 2019. However, the pandemic in 2020 put off the idea. Milan’s mayor Giuseppe Sala and the council made it known to both clubs that the idea will not be taken forward yet. Since Inter’s new owners are still unknown and this is an important project which is worth €1.2 billion. Thus, project San Siro will see a delay until Inter’s long-term future is known.
