Inzaghi surprised by Inter’s intensity against Porto

Simone Inzaghi was surprised by Inter’s energy and intensity in the 2nd leg of Round of 16. The Nerazzurri qualify for the quarter-finals of the Champions League for the first time in 12 years. The game had its moments, as it had a frantic finish. Mehdi Taremi hit the post and the crossbar for Porto in the injury time. However, Inter managed to hold on to their lead, and they absorbed all the pressure Porto applied. Inzaghi went with a pragmatic approach and asked a lot out of his players, who exceeded his expectations.

The Italian manager praised the defensive performance of his side after having troubles in the back this season. Inter were compact and managed to defend for long periods, as Porto had the majority of the possession. The Nerazzurri however, suffered slightly in the injury time, which Inzaghi felt was too long. Also, the former Lazio manager silenced the critics by taking his side to the quarter-finals of the Champions League. Many thought that Porto were the favorites here at home.

The Nerazzurri have had some troubles on the road, as they are struggling to win away games in Serie A. However, Inter have been a different side in the Champions League this season. Porto had the best chances in the match, but credit goes to Onana. The former Ajax keeper helped Inter with his fine saves in Estadio do Dragao.
It was a crucial game for Inzaghi, as he was getting backlash for the inconsistency Inter have shown this season. The Nerazzurri are still alive in all competitions and will now revert their focus to Serie A and Coppa Italia. Inzaghi mentioned that Inter did have some good chances with Lautaro and Barella. So they would have suffered less if either of the two were more clinical.
