Chelsea tried to sign Nicolo Barella on deadline day, as they were having issues to sign Enzo Fernandez. The Blues had a busy transfer window, and were looking to sign another star midfielder before the transfer window shut down. After Jorginho’s departure, Chelsea were eager to sign a replacement and were having difficulties in getting Enzo over the line. So they decided to enquire about Nicolo Barella, but Inter were not willing to sell their key midfielder.
Ausilio and Marotta rejected Chelsea’s request, as Barella is untouchable in the Inter squad. Moreover, a deadline day move would have left Inter with no time to find a replacement. The Italian midfielder is essential for Inzaghi’s system, and has been in fine form this season. He is one of the best midfielders in Serie A, and Inter will not sell him in the near future. Graham Potter uses a similar system as Inter and was looking to improve his midfield options.
Chelsea tried to sign Barella before Enzo Fernandez
The Blues were in talks to sign Enzo Fernandez from Benfica for a long time. But they were having trouble over the transfer fee and agreement with Benfica. They decided to search for other options, and Potter liked Barella’s profile. Chelsea have had difficulties in progressing the ball forward, and penetrating defenses. Barella is excellent in creating chances and carrying the ball forward. Also, the Blues might lose Kante, so they had to add some midfielders to their squad.
Chelsea went all-in in the winter transfer window to improve their position in the league. They are currently stuck at 10th and signed multiple players, including Enzo Fernandez, for a British record transfer fee of €121 million. They aim to get into the top four with these additions, and go deep in the Champions League this season.
