Inter Milan duo Lautaro Martinez and Nicolo Barella are in the 30-player shortlist for the Ballan d’Or. The Nerazzurri had a successful season and the striker-midfielder duo were an integral part of the team. Lautaro Martinez was the main man for Inter, and he scored a plethora of goals last season. The Argentine striker was on a different level after winning the World Cup and helped Inter to reach the Champions League final after more than a decade. However, he struggled to contribute to Argentina at the biggest stage.
Lautaro Martinez was the nailed-down starter for the Argentina national team. However, he was going through a rough patch and could not register a goal or an assist at the biggest stage. Hence, he got out of the starting eleven, with Alvarez making way for him. However, after winning the World Cup, Lautaro turned up his level for Inter, as he became the top-scorer for Inter’s second season in a row.
Lautaro Martinez and Nicolo Barella in Ballan d’Or shortlist
Nicolo Barella is also on the list, despite Italy not making it to the World Cup. However, the Italian midfielder’s performance at the club level and in the Champions League has been commendable. Barella drives the Nerazzurri midfield and has been one of the best young midfielders in Europe. However, Italy not getting to the World Cup will restrict his votes.
Andre Onana, the former Inter keeper is also on the list. The Cameroonian keeper is now with Man United, but his performance at Inter has earned him a place in the top 30. Onana was a key figure in defense to help Inter in getting success in the Champions League. However, he got out of the Cameroon national team after a dispute with the manager. Also, he decided to retire from international football, and will focus at the club level.
