Milan Skriniar red card was harsh, says Calhanoglu

Inter Milan players felt the officials made a mistake by giving a red card to Milan Skriniar against Empoli. The Nerazzurri were down to ten men for more than 50 minutes and hence struggled to compete at home. The 1-0 loss will hurt Inter, as they could have moved up the table to 2nd position, bringing their city rivals Milan down. Inter were coming with momentum into this game, as they won the Supercoppa Italiana convincingly. However, their inconsistent run continues as they failed to find an equalizer at Meazza.

Milan Skriniar got a yellow card for a tactical foul earlier in the first half. Empoli looked better on transition, so Inter had to make fouls to stop the counter-attacks. However, Skriniar’s second yellow card was rather harsh as both Caputo and Skriniar went for the ball. The Slovenian defender’s boot was high, but he managed to make contact with the ball. Caputo was wearing protective gear, which favored the decision to his side.

The Turkish midfielder was vocal after the game, as he said the referees can not make mistakes like that. The former Milan midfielder said he respects their decision, but Skriniar made contact with the ball and did not deserve a second yellow. The Nerazzurri captain had no intention to harm Caputo, but the referee decided not to give him a warning, as he gave another yellow.

Inter tried to maintain their shape in the second half, but Empoli were a serious threat in transition. Calhanoglu could not stop the goal as Bajrami scored past him on the counter. The Nerazzurri could not find the equalizer as they were down to ten men and Empoli had a solid defense. They will now look to get back to winning ways against Cremonese on the weekend.
