Inter’s win over Fiorentina is probably the most dramatic game this season will have. The Nerazzurri played catch-up for the most part of the game despite dominating. All thanks to the clumsy defence that left Handanovic exposed more often than not. Inter need better defending to win the Scudetto. There’s absolutely no doubt that La Viola have an amazing set of players this season. If not for Alexis Sanchez Fiorentina had the three points at San Siro this time.
The Nerazzurri were a bit rusty at the start of the game. But as the game progressed Inter dominated more and more of the play. Apart from Viola’s first goal that came in the 3rd minute of the game itself, the rest came out of counter-attacks. D’Ambrosio and Kolarov were often too deep into the opposition’s defence leaving Bastoni alone to stop counters. The two were meant to play as centre-backs but they played more and more like full-backs. While Conte encourages ball-playing centre-backs he certainly doesn’t want the defence to be too deep into the attack.
Thankfully, de Vrij will be back from suspension in the next game. This will provide the defence with some solidity. But if Conte still plans to play full-backs as centre-backs he needs to fix some issues. Milan Skriniars absence was felt when D’Ambrosio who scored the winning goal made a number of defensive errors. Honestly, it’s unfair to take a dig at D’Ambrosio and Kolarov because they’ll need time to fit into the position. But with the upcoming fixtures, time is a luxury in the Nerazzurri camp.
Inter need better defending for the upcoming matches
After playing newly-promoted Benevento in the next game, Inter will take on Lazio followed by Milan. And the Nerazzurri cannot drop points to either of those if they want to contend for the Scudetto. The mid-week game against Benevento will be Inter’s last chance to settle their defence for the next two games. With the club management squashing any rumours of Milan Skriniar leaving the club, Conte will have him in the squad in the next game. This is also the right time to start having Hakimi on the starting eleven. He is freaky quick and can certainly defend well as seen in the last game. Vidal will also play a very important role in the midfield as Inter need better defending to win the Scudetto this season.
